2nd Great Depression~ Free Heat!

As I sit here barefoot on my concrete slab floor in my family room I am so grateful for the foresight to install a wood-burning stove on our humble homestead! I wandered into the living room (away from the wood stove) to see what it had to say about free heat.... well, I must say it gets awful lonely in there when we use our wood stove! It 'said' our home is 62F even though the furnace is set at a balmy 55F!!! And, to add to it, it's 30F outside right now.
We are quite fond of being toasty and quite spoiled by free heat, although I really need to make sure it doesn't get any warmer in here as that just won't be healthy!
We sure wouldn't want to get sick from being over-heated, now would we???

As a Deep Freeze Grips the US...

As the cold descends and brings its jolly friend, snow, we're so grateful for a warm home, good food and true friends! The closeness of our little family makes even these harshly cold and blustery days fun.
Making the craziness of 2013 seem more like a game, and winning creatively the only option, is how we get through it all.
And, as 2014 begins we look at this little cold and snowy spell as a test of our preparedness. To see my son confident that, no matter how bad the weather gets or if Joliet has no electricity, we will still be warm and have sufficient food is truly awesome! The sense of security our small lifestyle changes have provided is immeasurable.
As we march into 2014 we have many changes to the homestead and our lifestyle in general planned in order to provide new experiences, build skill levels and make our lives better.
What are your preps for cold weather? Power outages? Plans to better yourselves in 2014?

Bedtime?

I've loaded the log Matt cut into our wood stove, Matt set up coffee for morning and we're headed down the hall.... this fire should burn a few hours and keep the winds away...
Time to brush teeth, say prayers and snuggle in for the night...
Stay warm, all....
Please, please...
Do one small thing to help the homeless in your area...
Just one small thing could save someone's life in this treacherous cold weather!

Gray and Green Hat!

A bit of knitting tonight as we watch Waltons DVD's and chat about anything and everything...
Watching Matt cut a log in half and enjoying seeing him gain mastery of a simple hand saw...
Listening to the wind whip around the house in frustration as it tries to get in and get us...
The crackle of the fire as it warns the wind to stay back...
Wishing I had more hours to knit... ..... ...

Well, the furnace hasn't turned on in over an hour and the house is slowly getting toastier!
It is so fun to heat our homestead for free! There's just so little that beats the fun of this particular game.

Roasty-Toasty!

Wouldn't it be nice if every homeless person had a little cabin with a wood stove?

Warming the Homestead!

As our area is gripped by the current deep freeze, I am oh so grateful for our trusty wood stove! Soon the furnace won't need to run as our fire will have us roasty-toasty!!!

Good Morning from Our Homestead!

Hoping your family is warm this morning! It was -5F at 5:22am. Now, two (2) hours later, we've reached -13F with a text warning from the city of Joliet that -35 to -40F windchills are possible Sunday through Wednesday!
Bundle up, folks!
Check on your outdoor animals...
Check on the elderly...
Change your furnace filter...
Stock up on firewood...
Don't forget a scarf, hat and gloves on the kiddies as they head out to school Monday...
Brrrrrr......!!!!!
